They just have ZERO interest in knowing anything about anything, so they but what they see recommended most, not noting that it may be all because others are just recommending what THEY saw recommended most. They don't know squat about it beyond that and its price, but they recommend them to others, and they use whatever kind of strings are recommended for any guitar - usually Elixer 80/20's, whether they would be best for what they have or not. Most acoustic players I know simply bought a Martin or a Taylor, because that's what someone said they should buy as their "serious" guitar.

I'm not sure tone, build quality, wood type, string type, or any of that crap some of us obsess about around here matter one bit for 95% of players. Back in the day (about '70) I had a Gibson Hummingbird and one of my friends had one of those Yammies. Still, if you find a good one, you may prefer it over a given Martin. and they sounded quite good but Martins they are not.

Those Yamahas were amazing guitars at their price point in their day. That said, there are also many high end companies that try to build the perfect "Martin" by copying holy grail Martins or by taking the best features of various Martins and putting them together with higher production standards. You don't really begin to see things that are very different except in much cheaper guitars where less complicated designs and the least expensive materials possible are used or in high end and custom guitars where there is more room for experimentation. First, about 80% of guitars out there are made "like Martins" with shapes, bracing patterns, and to some degree even production methods and materials modeled after what Martin does at least to the point those things can be done at whatever price point the company is looking at.
